How to Install One (Step by Step)

First Decision: Panel or Direct Drill?

This is the most important choice and most guides skip right past it.


✅ Panel Method (Recommended)

Build a separate panel (MDF, foam board, or stretched black fabric over a frame) and do ALL the work on a table at waist height. Drill, thread, glue, trim, everything. Then mount the finished panel to the ceiling. Way less neck pain, way easier to fix mistakes, and completely removable if you're renting.

⚠️ Direct Drill (Harder)

Drill directly into your existing drywall ceiling. Cleaner look (no visible panel edge), but you're working overhead the entire time, you need attic/crawlspace access from above, and it's permanent. Also: drilling hundreds of holes in drywall can compromise your home's vapor barrier. Seal each hole with a dab of epoxy after threading if your attic has insulation.


Step 1: Unpack and Untangle Your Strands

Good kits (like the Fancystarceiling one) ship strands pre-bundled with a metal ferrule already attached to each group of ~300 strands. That ferrule plugs directly into the light engine port, so you don't need to cut or re-bundle anything. Each engine gets its own pre-made bundle.


What you DO need to do is carefully uncoil and separate the individual strands within each bundle. They ship tightly wound and will tangle if you rush. Lay the full bundle out straight on a long surface (hallway floor, driveway, whatever). Gently fan them out so each strand runs parallel. Don't yank or pull hard on individual strands, they'll knot up and you'll spend 30 minutes untangling what took 5 seconds to mess up.


⚠️ Expect casualties. You'll probably break or kink 5-10 strands during handling. That's normal. 290 out of 300 still looks amazing. Don't stress about it.


Step 2: Prep and Paint Your Surface

Paint it dark. Matte black is ideal, deep navy works too. This is the single biggest factor in whether your starlight ceiling looks real or looks like someone poked holes in a white panel. The dark surface absorbs the stray light around each hole. Without it, you get a 'halo effect' where light bleeds into the hole edges and makes every star look like a blurry blob instead of a pinpoint.


If you're building a panel: paint it before drilling. If you're going direct-drill into drywall, paint the ceiling first and let it fully dry. Use a roller, not a sprayer, because you want a slightly textured matte finish (spray paint can be too smooth and reflective).


Step 3: Plan Your Star Layout

This is where most people mess up. They space holes evenly, like a grid. Real stars don't work like that. You want randomness: clusters of 5-8 stars close together, empty gaps, a few lone bright ones off by themselves.


Don't overthink it, though. Take a pencil and lightly dot the surface. Stand back and look. Does it feel random? Good. Does it look like graph paper? Start over on that section. The human eye is annoyingly good at detecting patterns, so actual randomness matters.


Step 4: Drill the Holes

Use a 0.75mm to 1.5mm drill bit. The hole should be just barely larger than the strand for a snug fit. Tiny drill bits break easily, so buy extras (Dremel sells packs of small bits, or check Drill Bit City online).


Always drill from the visible side upward (or through the front of your panel). Drywall 'buckshots' out the back of the hole, meaning the exit side gets a ragged edge. You want that ragged side hidden above, and the clean entry hole facing the room.


Work in sections. Mark a 2x2 foot area, drill all the holes in it, then move on. If you're working overhead on a direct-drill install, your arms will thank you for taking breaks between sections.


Step 5: Thread the Strands

Feed each strand through from the back/above, letting about 1-2 inches poke out through the front. You'll trim these later (but NOT flush, more on that in a sec).

If you're working on a panel: this is easy. Panel is on a table, you push strands through from behind, gravity helps. Smooth.


If you're working on an existing ceiling: you're threading from the attic/crawlspace down through holes you can barely see. Here's the trick that saves hours: have someone in the room below shine a bright flashlight or work lamp straight up at the ceiling. From above, every drilled hole will glow like a little beacon. Without this, you'll spend half your time squinting at drywall trying to find 0.75mm holes in the dark.


Be careful not to kink or sharply bend the fibers. They have a minimum bend radius (roughly 10mm). A gentle curve is fine, a 90-degree fold will crack the fiber internally and that strand goes dark. Route strands in smooth arcs toward the engine.


Step 6: Secure the Strands

A tiny dot of hot glue (or clear epoxy) at each hole from the back side. This locks the strand in place so it can't slip out over time or get pulled loose when you're bundling them to the engine.


If you're doing a direct-drill into drywall and your attic has insulation, seal each hole with the glue. You just drilled potentially hundreds of holes through your ceiling's vapor barrier. A dab of hot glue per hole seals it back up and prevents moisture issues down the road.


Do NOT use super glue (cyanoacrylate) on fiber tips. It fumes and creates a cloudy white residue on the strand end, which dims the light output permanently. Hot glue or clear two-part epoxy only.


Step 7: Connect to the Light Engine

This part is actually easy with the kit because each bundle comes pre-terminated with a metal ferrule. You just push the ferrule into the engine's port until it seats firmly. No loose strands to wrangle, no trying to pack 300 individual fibers into a hole. The ferrule keeps everything aligned so each strand gets equal light from the LED.


Position each engine close to the center of the area its strands cover. With 1.5m strands, you've got about 5 feet of reach from engine to star. If you're doing the 2-engine kit, spread the engines across different zones so every section of the ceiling gets coverage. All engines connect back to a single Bluetooth controller, so they all sync together.


Step 8: Trim the Strands (Don't Go Flush)

This is where a lot of online guides give bad advice. They'll tell you to cut flush with the ceiling surface. Don't. Cutting flush lets light bleed into the drilled hole, creating a halo effect where each 'star' looks like a fuzzy blob instead of a sharp pinpoint. The bigger your drill hole, the worse this looks.


Instead, leave about 1/8' to 1/4' of strand poking out. It sounds like it'd be visible, but these fibers are 0.5mm thick. You literally cannot see them during the day or with lights on. At night, each one glows as a perfect tiny dot. Use sharp flush cutters and cut straight across (not at an angle). An angled cut scatters the light sideways.


Step 9: Power On, Test, and Fix

Connect the power supply, pair the app or grab the remote, and turn it on. Kill every other light source in the room. Now check for:

Dark spots — strands that aren't lighting up. Usually means they're not seated properly in the engine port. Push them in deeper or reposition.

Dim stars — could be a kinked fiber, a clouded tip (super glue casualty), or a strand that's too far from the LED in the port. Try repositioning.

Halos — light bleeding around a hole. Either the hole was drilled too large, or the strand is cut too flush. Pull the strand out slightly with tweezers.

Fix what you can. Accept the rest. A handful of imperfect stars out of 600 is invisible to everyone except you, and only because you know they're there.

Then turn off every other light in the room and just... look up. You earned this.
